Why did you choose Empire State College? What do you think is the best thing about the college?
There are so many things I like about SUNY Empire. I chose the college because of the quality of education at SUNY, the transfer of credits from career experience, the flexibility with class choices online and the reasonable cost.
How did Empire State College help you shape your personal and professional goals?
By working with my mentor, (the lovely Professor Vernon), I was able to chart a customized road map of classes to take and PLA’s to submit in order to accomplish my goal of attaining a bachelors degree in Business, Management & Economics. Professor Vernon helped me feel confident I could do it, despite my busy schedule.
What is your career highlight or proudest career moment to date?
I have three: First, obtaining a bachelors degree has instilled a new found confidence in me, which translates into everything I do. As a result, I was honored in 2016 as the New Financial Advisor of the Year, highlighting excellence in financial planning. In 2017, I completed the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER(tm) coursework and passed the rigorous exam. This is a designation held only by approximately 20% of all Financial Advisors. Lastly, I qualified for my firms National Sales Convention for the second time, which illustrates my dedication to helping my clients meet their financial goals.
What advice would you give to a current Empire State College student?
When I look back at the happiest moments in my life, it was when I worked hard, committed to a plan and eventually reached my goal. There is nothing better than feeling a sense of accomplishment.
Why do you give back to SUNY Empire?
Because I strongly believe in the institution’s mission to provide quality education to adult learners. It’s never too late pursue your dreams of higher education.
Anything else you would like to share with fellow alumni and students?
We live one life. Take action toward your goals. The progress you will make will feel empowering. You are what you do, not what you say you’ll do. Dreams don’t work unless you do.
