What three words best describe who and what you are?
Compassionate. Integrity. Justice.

What inspired you to earn your college degree? What was your “moment”?
I had two years of college between City College of New York at Bernard Baruch and City College of San Francisco. My Aunt and Uncle both graduated from ESC and told me about it because I was living in the Bahamas and Teaching Spanish and French at the Hotel Training College and I needed my 4 year degree. So on a visit to my home town in New York, I met with Bob Carey who was a wonderful mentor and I became the first long distance learner in the Caribbean. ESC had learners in Israel. Between courses taken with the University of Miami in Nassau on weekends, CLEP tests in New York and independent studies including my work at the college, I graduated in October 1983 with a Bachelor of Science in Bilingual Educational Studies. I went on to get a Doctorate in International Studies in Conflict Resolution with the Union Institute and graduated in 1987!

Why did you choose to attend ESC?
Because it fit my lifestyle to be an independent learner. It afforded me the opportunity to keep my job and still earn a degree.

Who supported and encouraged you along the way?
My aunt and uncle, my parents, friends and all the great staff at ESC.

What, if any, obstacles did you overcome?
I was fortunate to get a BEOG grant and because I was working, pay what I had to.

What advice would you give to a prospective ESC student?
I would ask them if they are self motivated, because I believe a person needs to be committed to their course of action in a non traditional educational setting. I’m so grateful for Interdependent Learning!

Why do you give back to SUNY Empire?
Because others need to know this type of education exists that may suit their lifestyle better.

How has your experience at ESC changed your life since graduation?
As I stated before, it motivated me to get a Ph.D.

Anything else you would like to share?
Great job! Go SUNY, go ESC!
