Why did you choose Empire State College? What do you think is the best thing about the college?
I chose Empire State shortly after meeting Colleen Reedy when she was on-site. Empire was offering classes at GEICO and the process of getting enrolled was easy! The staff at Empire State was unbelievable helpful and made being successful attainable. The best thing about Empire State is that they recognize their students are mostly adults who have full-time jobs as well as family and make it seamless to enter into their programs.

How did Empire State College help you shape your personal and professional goals?
On a personal level, I hadn’t been to school since 1989 when I earned my Associates Degree. I had always wanted to return to school to get my Bachelor’s degree and was never able to find the right time. Once I started working at GEICO and entered into management, it was a requirement to pursue a Bachelor’s degree. Meeting the folks from Empire State made it clear that this was the only way to go and I knew that the way they set up the program and curriculum that success was attainable!

What is your career highlight or proudest career moment to date?
My proudest career moment to date was when I was contacted by my Human Resources department to be interviewed by Channel 4 and talk about my experience with GEICO and their partnership with Empire State College. I was able to talk about the fact that I am 48 years old and getting my degree while advancing at work simultaneously. Neither one would be possible without the other.

What advice would you give to a current Empire State College student?
My advice to every Empire State College student is to stay focused and disciplined. Focus on what you are working for and never lose sight of it. Be disciplined with your schedule of school work. For me, I designated one full day on the weekend and 2-3 hours in the evening on Tuesday/Thursday as classwork time. It is important to stay as caught up as possible with your workload and be disciplined enough to make it a priority no matter what. The sacrifice now is so very worth it later!

Why do you give back to Empire State College?
I give back to Empire State because I am so very grateful for the personal achievement I feel each day knowing I have my Bachelor’s degree. Without the support I received from them, I would not be where I am today. They are truly the total package and I want others to have that measure of success that I now know.
