2018 Recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching
Professor Margaret (Peggy) Tally is a 2018 recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. Based at the college’s Manhattan location, and a resident of Maplewood, N.J., Tally teaches in the college’s School for Graduate Studies’ Policy Programs and coordinates the Master of Arts in Social and Public Policy. A member of the SUNY Empire faculty since 1992, her areas of expertise include social policy perspectives, ethics in social policy and media and public policy. Tally also studies representations of women in media.

U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Manual Jose Vingua ’18 is one step closer to achieving lifelong dream
He earned an Associate of Science in Community and Human Services, with a concentration in criminal justice studies, from SUNY Empire State College and is transferring to UCLA this fall. Accepted into the Army’s Green to Gold Active Duty Option Program, a two-year program that provides eligible, active-duty enlisted soldiers an opportunity to complete a baccalaureate degree, or a two-year graduate degree, and earn a commission as an Army officer, Vingua will be on active duty while he participates in UCLA’s ROTC program.

Honorary Degree conferred on Lumina Foundation CEO Jamie Merisotis
SUNY Empire State College conferred an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters on Jamie Merisotis, president and CEO of Lumina Foundation, at its Capital Region commencement ceremony,  on Sunday, June 3, in Albany, N.Y.  Lumina is the nation’s largest private foundation focused solely on increasing Americans’ success in higher education. “I’m honored to address this year’s graduating class at SUNY Empire,” said Merisotis. “And I’m truly humbled to accept an honorary degree from a university that is doing so much to support the success of students who don’t fit the traditional mold – students who are critical to this nation’s future success.”
