Why did you choose Empire State College? What do you think is the best thing about the college?
Back in the early 1980s, I was working at Kodak and wanted to get into sales. I was told by the national sales mgr. to “get my degree.” I was in the process when they needed a sales rep to go to NYC. I accepted but still wanted to finish getting my BS degree. Local colleges in Westchester would denying many of my already earned credits which bummed me out. I then heard about Empire, applied and was accepted. The best thing in addition to the credits (and the ones I earned from my experience) was that I earned my degree on my time at night and on weekends.
How did Empire State College help you shape your personal and professional goals?
Having a BS degree in Marketing allowed me to be a serious candidate as I moved through the ranks at Kodak. It gave me the confidence to apply to many great positions in sales management and marketing. It led me to my most favorite job which was VP and General Manager of the Americas Region where I was responsible for the sales of movie film across North and South America. Personally, my career relocated my family eight times and we all grew from the experiences living in the north and south, large cities and smaller and even an international four years in England.
What is your career highlight or proudest career moment to date?
A career highlight for me was helping other women get promoted to new roles because I had positions where I could be an advocate for them.
What advice would you give to a current Empire State College student?
Don’t give up. It is so worthwhile to have a college degree. Employers look at that because it gives credibility and shows you have the initiative to get your degree and you have all the knowledge you learned during the process.
